Recently, I was asked to create a Sunroom design for a client. The screened porch was going to be enclosed, and they needed the whole room designed. One of the requirements was storage and a desk of some sort. Well the way the room is set up, the only place for storage and a desk was in a corner. If any of you have ever tried to find a corner desk, let me tell you....it is NOT easy. I looked, and looked, and looked some more, to no avail. Not to be discouraged, I decided to design my own.
I was inspired by the great mid century pieces similar to these...but wanted to add a cottagy spin to it.

I decided to achieve the look I wanted, I could do it with pieces from good Ol' Ikea. The final result will look custom and nothing like an out of the box desk.

Originally, I wanted the BestA for my shelves. When trekked up to Charlotte for my big shopping trip.... low and behold I was told that they had a "run on those shelves" the night before and they were totally out! Ahhhhhhh, what to do. Turns out the Stuva in the children's section is virtually identical in size.

BestA

Stuva

And a drawer to go along with it.

Crisis averted...shew!

Next I needed a top. Numerar to the rescue. For this project I bought (2) 95" lengths.

All I needed was a pair (or 2) of handy people to help me cut and put it all together. (2) L-brackets hold the waterfall top together, and a handfull of screws. I also replaced the hardware on the drawer with a cup pull. Voila!

Just goes to show, that
A.) Just because it doesn't exist in a store, doesn't mean it can't be done.
B.) out of the box doesn't necessarily mean that is how you have to use it as such
C.) "Custom" doesn't necessarily mean big bucks!

Hope your inspired to do some " Ikea hacking"!
I Finally got my Fabric Design Hung in the upstairs hallway. I even made the drapes myself! During one of the hottest days of the year....I was a one woman sweatshop. I am not sure what to call the design, but I am sure it will come to me. I created this design a long time ago, (read about it here.) Inspired by the infamous Florence Broadhurst. Mind you, this is before Kate Spade came out with the Florence Broadhurst line back in February...Florence Broadhurst has been one of my favorite fabric designers, like forever! Maybe I will call her, Florence Floral:) I plan on selling a few of my designs in the Fall...in a few different colorways, so stay tuned.

Here is another view...
Anyway...I am preparing for a big trip...I am really excited about it. I will be taking lots of photos with Instagram, so if you want to see where I am and when, follow me....#gretchenostudio. I promise you won't be disappointed. (at least I hope not:)

This weekend I FINALLY downloaded Instagram. Wow! I may be addicted. I have always enjoyed taking photos, but this makes it so much more fun, and there is instant gratification with effects. Here is what I took this weekend. My husband and I were able to get away to Asheville for a quick visit. And we always hit the antique stores. The Tobacco Barn being a favorite. But this time we made it to The Screened Door, which was awesome. I was able to snag a few things for clients.

Enjoy.
Having a wonderful summer so far. I hope you all are as well. What about this bizarro weather?? For those of you in the south, you know what I mean. I am certainly not complaining, but for real, this is weird. I mean low 80's, seriously...the motto of our town is Famously Hot, and I am still using the attic fan in June. Let's hope it keeps up. Happy Days.

Ok, I have left you waiting long enough! Here is the reveal of the stairwell. I always hated the hand rail, it seemed as though it was just hanging there. This is something I have been mulling over for a while. I figured, I tell my clients "It's just paint!" on a daily basis, I should probably live by my own advice. I started at 3:00 in the afternoon, and by 7:00 I was all finished....including the gallery wall!

before

Now it is grounded....and all it took was a big dose of Benjamin Moore Richmond Green. (I wish it was as easy to ground me, but that is a WHOLE different story.

I chose a satin finish for those little grimy fingers, and it casts a really pretty sheen too.

I added a gallery wall too...and a mirror at the top and bottom of the stairs.

I didn't stop with the stairway, I took the green all the way around. And I couldn't be happier. It makes waking up in the morning and trudging down the stairs just a little bit easier:)
So I have let my house fall on the back burner over in the past few months, with getting my business off the ground and everything else. My poor house (and family) have suffered, you know "the cobbler's children, don't have shoes syndrome!" Well this past weekend I sought to make a change....a GREEN change.

In case you are wondering, the paint swatches above, were the beginning of my little project.....I have gotten a little tired of this pic floating around Pinterest....it just looks unfinished, and dare I say a little boring.
Ok, I know ya'll...I haven't posted in like a month! I promise I haven't been twittling my thumbs and popping bon-bons:) It has kind of been like when you haven't talked to a friend in a long time, and start putting off the phone call because you worry about you won't have enough to say or you may have too much to say, or she might be mad you didn't call earlier. Well, absence from the blog has made me a little apprehensive to jump back in...and before I knew it it was 3 weeks later. It almost feels like I am starting over with my very first post....what do I write about that won't be lame? will anyone read it? What has made me the most inspired over the past weeks? What have I been DOING the past few weeks?

So I decided to stick with inspiration, and nothing is more inspiring than the Talented Jamie Meares from Furbish Studio in Raleigh. Her work was recently highlighted in a whole article for LonnyMag.

I have a funny story to tell about that. Jamie and I have a mutual vendor in common. M, the traveling rug man. (notice the rug in the above photo). So happy to see it's final resting place...

Anyhoo, He has beautiful antique persian rugs of all shapes and sizes. He pops in occasionally to show his gorgeous pieces, I have used a couple in client spaces and was lucky enough to have one in my studio for a bit.

One day he told me he was on his way to Raleigh to visit Jamie with Furbish Studio. I had no idea he worked with her as well. We were able to speak on the phone one afternoon, when M. connected us. She just happened to mention that they were preparing for shoot with Lonny that very day. I felt just little bit like I got some inside scoop, and really couldn't wait to get the issue. It did not dissapoint. Here is little snippit, but you will have to go to Lonny to see the whole article.
One more thing....When I was on my way to DC a couple weeks ago, I decided to take a detour to Raleigh to go see the studio in person. It was so fun to see all of the pieces I have coveted from afar. AND I got to splurge on a couple things for my friend's apartment.

Really..... I suggest if you are up your way I95 it is only a 20 min diversion (plus however long you stay in the store...I was there for 1 hr...and could have totally overstayed my welcome if it weren't for the fact I had a best friend waiting with glass of vino for me in DC:) If you can't divert or take a trip...she sells just about EVERYTHING in her online shop.

Unfortunately Jamie wasn't in the Studio that day, so I hope to finally connect in person the next time I am in the hood.

If you want a great design inspiration she has a fantastic Blog I Suwannee.

Ok, whew, got through my "I'm back post". Are you inspired? I know I am.
I have two clients that I am working on Banquette Designs...so quite reasonably I have had them on my brain. Pinterest, Houzz, Google.... you know the usual suspects. I have searched near and far, far and wide and then there is the
dreaming. I've been DREAMING in banquettes. I think I even dreamt of a
banquette that flys! I could go on and on....the possibilies for storage, size, shape, architectural interest, detail, decor are endless....You know with all of it's functions...it might be able to fly! Anyway, here are some of my inspiration photos from various sources.

So here is the reveal of the little 7 year old girl's bedroom that I finished the other week. She specifically wanted hot pink and blue. And that she got. One of the great things about the Annie Selke Links fabric is that it is juvenile enough, but grown up enough to get her through her teens. She actually picked the fabric herself and I added the Floral to the mix, and the banding to the drapes and valance.
You must check out Whitney Mcgregor from Whim Interiors. Her blog is The Avarice and she has lots of great design tips and inspiration.

Anyway. Have a great week. We have started ours out with the stomach bug, and I have my brother's wedding that we leave for on Thursday...keep your fingers crossed the bug stays away. I knew I should have knocked on wood when I proclaimed we had been so "free of sickness this year"...geash!
This weekend I was out and about doing a couple things for clients. I dropped by a flea market a bit outside of town and came across this painting. $5 ya'll! I KNOW, right? The vendor was packing up his truck, and he saw me glancing at it, "I'll give it to you for 5 Bucks." I thought about it for a split second, "SOLD!". He then goes on to say that his daughter painted it when she was in college...I hope she isn't devastated that he sold it...and if she is, he says he sold it for more.

Some art that comes out of college art classes, can be A. Better than you would expect and B. Really inexpensive. I know it isn't "fine" art, but it really ties the colors of my living room together, and for $5 you couldn't find an 8 X 10 frame, much less a 40"X40" yellow one!

My ever evolving mantle now has something new on it, which makes me H-A-P-P-Y!

It is spring break here...not going out of town....and LOTS of house projects I want to finish. Since I am tied to the house, hopefully I will get them done:)
call it ALL OF THE ABOVE...

the blog was put on the back burner.

Because it has sprinkled a little inspiration, and I feel like I just might be getting my drink of water....I might be finding the balance, between too much inspiration and not enough, too much work and feeling distant from my family...sometimes it is just a good thing to step away for a while and prioritize.
I have always been a fan of Designer's Guild, and often peruse the website for inspiration. It is a fearless use of color and pattern type of company and runs far and deep. I think all interiors could use a little infusion of it, but I am a color and pattern kind of girl. They have everything from fabric to rugs to bedding and furniture. All full of pattern, all full of color! My kind of company! The style is bright and carefree and complex and simple all at the same time. That is why she is amazing.

But I have a little confession to make, I did not know that the company started at the hands of 1 very talented designer...Tricia Guild in 1970, and has evolved into the "Designer's Guild" that we know today. I remember flipping through a House Beautiful and running across a piece on her...and thinking Tricia Guild what a cool name, and then reading further and finding out that the surname Guild was the Guild in Designer's Guild...talk about a light bulb moment! Here is a little snippet viaWikipedia click here to read more.

Tricia Guild established Designers Guild, in 1970 [1] whilst searching for textiles to decorate with. By re-colouring a collection of Indian hand-block printed textiles, the first collection was established. She opened her store on the Kings Road with her first collection of fabrics, also selling ceramics and furniture. In 1974 she started working with artists such as Kaffe Fassett, Lilian Delavoryas and Janice Tchalenko, amongst others...

Throughout the 1990s Guild focused her attention on expanding the range as Designers Guild grew in the UK and overseas. The flagship store and showroom are situated on the Kings Road, London and include a showroom devoted entirely to fabrics, wall coverings, furniture and paint.
In the 1980s the company’s reputation started to build. Tricia’s brother Simon Jeffreys, who was in corporate finance with Coopers & Lybrand, joined the company as Chief Executive, in partnership with Founder and Creative Director, Tricia Guild. In 1985 DG turnover was £3.0m and now in 2010 it has grown to over £50m [2] with over 250 staff and offices and showrooms in London, Paris,
Munich and Milan and a 66,000 sq ft (6,100 m2) distribution centre in West London.
Today Designers Guild exports to over 60 different countries and won the Queen’s Award for Export Achievement in 1991 and 1996. A licensing division has been developed into product areas which include upholstered furniture, paint, bedlinen and towels as well as stationery and home fragrance. A new division was also set up to produce and manufacture fabrics and wallcoverings under license to further utilise the Designers Guild sales and distribution network.

Designers Guild also produces under licence The Royal Collection of Fabrics and Wallpapers, William Yeoward Fabric and Wallpaper and Jasper Conran Fabric. They are also the distributor for Ralph Lauren Home throughout Europe and the Middle East. Designers Guild launched their new website and UK online shop in March 2008 to promote their brand online. They also created an interactive fabric and wallpaper library on the website, and customer scrapbook facility with an aim to maximise business opportunities. The USA online shop was launched in 2009, offering their full range of home accessories to the US market.
Guild was awarded an OBE for services to interior design.[3]

My new Kivik Sofa!

Sorry for the lack of posts, with the new studio, I have gotten out of my " normal" routine and into a new one. The time I used to be in front of the computer writing in the morning, is now the time that I actually TAKE a shower and get ready for the day...my hair has been blown dry more in the past 2 weeks than in the past 5 years! It is kind of nice having a place to go in the morning, but I miss my time writing and styling photos, and will try to get better and find the perfect time to get back on a schedule. Always a work in progress:)

Speaking of work in progress, out studio space is coming along...that is why I want to spend so much time there, it just makes me happy. My studio mate has been gallivanting the countryside of Argentina this past week.... and with no one to sit with and have our morning design pow wows, I have been sprucing and zhushing while she has been away. (maybe I could have been a better blogger during that time, hindsight:)

So, back to the point of my post....My new sofa and Pillows! Last weekend, I gallivanted myself up to Charlotte and went to IKEA. I have been dying to get a sofa for the studio and couldn't stand it any longer. The space needed some weight, the room was feeling a little leggy! I definitely wanted white! The Kivik Sofa was the perfect match. It has weight, is comfy, and can be modified from a sofa into chairs. I am not a huge fan of the blocky arms, but luckily you don't have to use them! And at $170 per chair and $29 per slipcover it was a no brainer! And talk about easy to put together.

this is what it all looked like before!

AND I got my favorite go to RITVA curtains for the much needed privacy. I love our 3 windows, but talk about a fishbowl. So 3 sets of those were put up as well, and now I can dance around like a looney tune without anyone knowing...shhhhh, don't tell anyone:)

Serious bang for your buck...no excuses for no curtains....at $30 per pair they are perfect!

After my ikea IKEA trip...I stopped by Post and Gray in Charlotte.

Had me at Gray and a green door!

It was my first trip, and it was WAY worth it. Not only are Kelly and her Husband more than gracious...they have tons of great, affordable pieces from a carefully selected group of vendors. So....true to form, I picked up a few remnants of fabric for my pillows AND a piece of artwork. Really, if you are in the area, you must stop by and see them.

My newest Coffee Table Books!

I really love coffee table books, especially Design Books. Many times this is what I turn to for inspiration for a design project (and my coveted collection of magazines, but that's another story!) When I was in Atlanta at Market, I made sure to sit in on a couple of talks and book signings. One was with Brooke and Steve Gianetti from Velvet and Linen. They just published a book called Patina Style, the photos are AMAZING. and Steve takes most of the photos himself. This dynamic Duo was just a treat to listen too...and I of course got my book signed.

The second talk I attended was with Christiane Lemieux founder of Dwell Studio, Maxwell Gillingham-Ryan cofounder and CEO of apartmenttherapy.com, and Heather Clawson from Habitually Chic blog. It was a great talk on the power of blogs and business, where technology is taking us in the design world, and how you can embrace technology and make your business better. Christiane and Maxwell both have new books out. UnDecorate by Christiane is just that...don't worry about "decorated" spaces, make them uniquely yours...and Decorate like you live. And Maxwell's is Big Book on Small, Cool Spaces....has such great photos and ideas on how to design a small space. So I of course got mine signed, and was a little star struck and chatty when it was my turn to get my book signed....a total dork. They couldn't have been nicer, and down to earth. Maxwell and I had a really nice chat. (which puts us on BFF status, in case you were wondering...HA!) And I think Christiane couldn't be any more inspiring, founding/creating/ and running DWELL and having a family...she is a rockstar. And Heather is in the midst of writing a book that will be out this fall. We chatted a little about her process, etc.

Here I am with my starstruck grin.... thank you to the kind strangers that used my cameraphone to snap these photos.
The day has come to reveal my living room design from the big install last week. This has been a project I have been working on for about 2 months....so seeing it come together was so satisfying to this "get it done, and get it done NOW kind of girl!" But it was well worth the wait. When my client opened the door and said " SHUT UP, this is NOT my house!" It was such an HGTV moment:) I think I have had a permagrin on my face for a week:)

I was tasked with creating a plan that included the existing sofa, rug, and coffee table. I swapped one chair in another room with the leather chair. This 1920's home had recently been renovated, so the walls had already been painted Sherwin Williams Sedate Gray....which casts green in this room. They wanted a Cozy, Neo-Traditional room, with a collected feel and a sense of history. So here is the end result.

The home has no "formal" foyer, so I created one by floating the sofa and having a sofa table as you first walk in the door. Luckily the room was wide enough to make this happen. I love a floating sofa! The homeowner sent me a link to Mantadia Rug from Anthropologie for the dining room.. but it was crewel and would have been destroyed in 2 seconds flat...so not wanting to disappoint, this little bench was a surprise for her. I ordered a 2X3 and had the bench covered. Just the pop of color the room needed!

Just another view. You can see that the Bookcase picks up the same color in the pillow.
And a view of the "Collected Wall".

Sometimes there is this thing I like to call Interior Serendipity. I was out perusing the antique mall while I was sourcing for this room and came across the bookcase. I ran to the car and grabbed my swatch of pillow fabric and was thrilled when I saw that it was a match to the small bit of seafoamy/aqua! YES! I turned to my Invisible Tommy Smythe and said, "I think we'll take it:)" Now, if I had brought this aqua bookcase into the room 2 weeks before the install, my client would have said...WHAT are you thinking? Some things are better left for the final reveal. But in the context of the room, it is just the point of interest that the room needed. N'est pas?

One of the things the homeowners wanted was to integrate regional artists into the design. I snapped up this piece when I was a Scott Antique Market from the artist Tracy Jefferies from Arcing Sky Gallery in Athens. She shows at Scott Antique Market every month. The colors are perfect, and it is just on the edge of an abstract, and can be translated loosely into a landscape. I love it! Another artist used in the design was a local artist, Alicia Leeke. I used two of her prints on the same collected wall. You must check out her work. Beautiful colors.

I am so excited to finally tell you all about her and our little endeavor.

First off, her name is Tara Felder the owner of Jot Papers in Columbia, SC. An amazing graphic designer that has over the past 4 years developed quite a portfolio of beautiful custom stationery. If you want anything custom that has to do with paper and design....she is your girl!

AND (insert drum roll)

We are now partners in Creative Crime! About 3 weeks ago we started the arduous process of transforming a dreary office space into a light and bright studio space. I mean blood, sweat, and tears ya'll....literally! Late nights, weekends, kids in tow, it has been an adventure. More than once we would both step away, mulling over another decision...and blurt out the same idea. Separated at birth...maybe:)
We have so much in store for our little space. Lots of creative energy bouncing around the walls. From both of our business's everyday work to collaborative efforts involving everything from paper to fabric to furniture, there will be lots of projects to share.

Tara is working tirelessly on a new e-commerce Website Jot Papers showcasing all of her work, so for those of your that are not local, her work will be available to you with a click of a finger.

As for me, I am so happy to be out of my creative vacuum....life might just get a little easier and more productive....2012 is shaping up to be quite a year.

Oh, and if you want to stop by the studio. We are open by appointment, but if you stop by and the lights are on, knock twice hold your breath and knock 3 more times....someone will come to the door. Don't be surprised if there is a paintbrush or staple gun, or we are surrounded by paint and paper swatches in hand.....it is just 2 girls doing withat they love most....creating!

Stop by and see us, or you can find us both online. Tara has a fun inspirational blog, Jot Papers.
